In the second leg of the Armenian Cup semifinal, Pyunik visited Ararat Armenia at the FFA Technical Center/Football Academy. In the first leg, the current cup holder managed to gain a 2-0 advantage over our team and made a serious bid to reach the final for the second year in a row.
Unlike the first leg, Pyunik played more structured this time and were able to neutralize the opponent’s aggressive forwards. In the 39th minute, Daniil Kulikov sent the ball to the Ararat-Armenia penalty area, and Anton Bratkov made our team advance with an unstoppable header.
The goal scored gave additional confidence to our players, and after the break, Pyunik managed to get the second goal and equalize the total score of the confrontation. After David Davidyan's pass the opponent's defender Joao Queiros scored an own goal.
The score remained unchanged till the end of the regular time, and the game continued in the extra time. There the home team took the lead and the luck was with Pyunik only few times. It is noteworthy that our team's defender Anton Bratkov had to continue the match despite an injury, since Yeghishe Melikyan had made all the substitutions.
The extra time didn’t reveal the winner either, and a post-match penalty shootout was appointed, where the fortune smiled on Ararat-Armenia’s players. Of our team, Taron Voskanyan and Sergey Vakulenko failed to score the penalty kicks.
Although Pyunik regained all they had lost in the first leg thanks to their heroic efforts, it was not enough to reach the final.
