In the final match of the 10th round of the Armenian Premier League, Noah and Pyunik faced off in Abovyan. Without a doubt, this was one of the central matches of the championship.
Noah, who had won all 9 of their matches in the championship and comfortably topped the standings, would have extended their lead over Pyunik to 9 points with a victory—a gap that would have been exceptionally difficult for our team to close down the line. A Pyunik victory, on the other hand, would bring our team within 3 points of the leaders. In other words, the stakes of this game were high for both sides.
Compared to the previous match, Dmitry Gunko made only one change to Pyunik's starting lineup: Artak Dashyan started in place of Viti.
The hosts created the first opportunity of the game: David Sualehe’s free-kick shot went straight into the hands of Henry Avagyan.
Shortly after, Noah's Romanian winger Valentin Costache had two chances to score in the span of just one minute, but our team's goalkeeper, Henry Avagyan, made brilliant saves on both occasions.
Pyunik registered their first shot on Noah's goal in the 20th minute, when Gevorg Tarakhchyan tested Arthur Koneglian's vigilance from distance.
Then, in the 31st minute, to our team's delight, Pyunik managed to open the scoring. James Santos delivered a well-calculated cross from the left wing into the penalty area, and Daniil Kulikov finished it with a one-touch strike into Noah's net—1:0. It is worth noting that the 28-year-old midfielder has now recorded a goal contribution in 5 consecutive matches.
After the break, our team had a great opportunity to double the lead: Davit Hakobyan found Iasonas Pikis in the center of the pitch, and the latter dribbled forward, bypassing David Sualehe. He could have passed to Gevorg Tarakhchyan or Artak Dashyan, who were both in better scoring positions, but the Cypriot forward attempted to finish the attack himself and missed a fantastic chance.
Just seconds after that missed opportunity, Noah punished our team. The hosts' tall Serbian forward, Marko Lazetić, surrounded by several of our players, managed to turn and send the ball into the far corner of our net—1:1. Lazetić demonstrated high individual quality in that moment, and Henry Avagyan could only watch the ball go in.
In the remaining time of the match, Noah could have scored twice more. However, in one instance, Pyunik defender Nikolaos Kainourgios blocked a dangerous shot by Hélder Ferreira, and in another, Marin Jakoliš tried to score with a clever shot from a tight angle, but Henry Avagyan once again stepped up to the task.
Thus, the third consecutive match between these teams in the championship ended in a draw (1:1), which was perhaps a fair result for this game.
Noah retained top spot in the table with 28 points, while Pyunik slipped to 3rd place with 22 points, as Ararat-Armenia narrowly defeated BKMA (1:0) in another match of the round to move ahead of our team by one point.
It should be added that Pyunik will play their next match on October 23, hosting the championship's bottom team, Gandzasar, which will conclude the first half of the season.
