Our last rival at the training camp is the Russian football club Orenburg. The match will take place on February 13 in the evening, and before the game, we share interesting facts about the opponent. The club was founded bearing the name Gazovik in 1976 on the basis of local Lokomotiv, representing Orenburg in the second league of the USSR. The path to the most significant achievements of the team began in the 21st century. In the 2000s Orenburgers repeatedly contended to qualify for the second division of the country and in 2011 they succeeded. In the 2014/15 season, the team came fifth in the championship, and reached the semifinals of the Russian Cup, where they lost only in a penalty shootout to Lokomotiv Moscow, which subsequently won the tournament. In 2016, the club became a member of the Premier League for the first time and, as a representative of the entire region changed its name to Orenburg.
Now Orenburg closes the top eight of the elite division. Marcel Lička is the head coach of the team. In the current season the team enters the top-6 by expected points and main attacking metrics. It places fourth in terms of clear chances, and in the amount of time spent on the opponent's half conceding only to Zenit, the championship leader.
In Orenburg forward Vladimir Sychevoi (now Pisarskiy) showed himself. The footballer came to Orenburg from the third division in 2022, scored 14 goals in 15 RPL games and made his debut in the national team. The forward attracted everyone's attention not only by his performance but also by his unusual joy when scoring goals and vivid interviews. In 2023, the striker moved to another RPL club.
This season, several Argentines have joined Orenburg. Three of them, Gabriel Florentín, Lucas Vera, and Matías Pérez, are currently the most expensive newcomers in the club's history.
And winger Brian Mansilla, playing on loan from Racing, represented Argentina at the 2017 Youth South American Championship along with five future world champions (Lautaro Martínez, Lisandro Martínez, Christian Romero, Nahuel Molina, and Juan Foyth).
Stepan Hovhannisyan, a Russian footballer of Armenian origin, plays for Orenburg. In the 21/22 season, Arshak Koryan, who also played 5 matches for the Armenia national team, played for the Orenburgers.
