Pyunik will play a control match with Saburtalo on September 9 during the training camp in the capital of Georgia.
The club was founded in 1999 and was named after the district with the same name in Tbilisi. It is noteworthy that Saburtalo is literally translated from Georgian as ‘a place for ball games’.
Since 2005, the club has focused on the development of its academy, inviting experienced Georgian specialists and establishing cooperation with the Spanish Football Federation. By the 2014/15 season, Saburtalo went from the country's lower divisions to the top league.
In the 2018/19 season, the team won the Georgian championship and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
Saburtalo made its debut in the main club tournament of Europe with a sensational victory over Moldovan Sheriff after two legs. The rival of the Georgian team was by that time a regular participant in the European Cups, had made it to the group stage and was considered the undoubted favorite of the confrontation.
After a strong performance in the first qualifying round, the Georgian team failed to overcome Dinamo Zagreb and qualified for the Europa League, where they lost to Ararat-Armenia. In the following seasons, Saburtalo also played in the European cups, but didn’t reach the group stage.
In 2019 and 2021, the club won the Georgian Cup and in 2020 the Super Cup.
Now 9 alumni are playing in the main team. The average age of the team is 25.2. After 24 days of the season, the team is placing 3rd with 45 points and a difference of 26 goals scored and conceded. Central attacker Cheikne Sylla with 11 goals and 4 assists scored is the most valuable player at the moment.
Since January last year, the team has been coached by Omari Tetradze, who previously worked with clubs of the highest and second divisions of Russia and in the Kazakhstan Premier League.
Our match with Saburtalo is already this Saturday, September 9 at 17:00.
We are expecting to see an interesting match and we wish a victory to Pyunik!
