Pyunik loses a two-goal lead in a match against Ararat-Armenia

The Fastex Premier League resumed after a short break. In the central match of the round, at the Avan Academy Pyunik was received by Ararat-Armenia, which was one point behind our team before the match.

Pyunik started the game successfully; in the 17th minute, after a corner kick, Kamo Hovhannisyan fouled Anton Bratkov in his own penalty area, and we received a penalty kick. Our team captain Edgar Malakyan approached the ball and put Pyunik ahead with an unstoppable shot.

A few minutes later, our players managed to double the score. Edgar Malakyan, having received the ball in the center of the field, moved forward a little, then passed the ball brilliantly to Matas Vareika who, being next to Henry Avagyan, managed to hit Ararat-Armenia’s goal. The Lithuanian player scored his third goal for Pyunik in five games of the league.

It seemed Pyunik was close to the win, but the hosts didn’t get discouraged by the two missed goals, and before going on a break, Zhirayr Shaghoyan reduced the score with a free kick goal. Moreover, his shot touched our players, standing in a wall, and slightly confused Stanislav Buchnev.

At the start of the second half, after a dangerous pass from the left wing by Tenton Yenne, Buchnev managed to eliminate the threat with great difficulty. The game was hot but the most important developments were yet to come. In the 70th minute, Ararat-Armenia managed to equalize the score. Tenton Yenne broke into the penalty area from the wing and passed the ball to Eric Ocansey whose shot Stanislav Buchnev was able to push back. However, in a turmoil, Ocansey managed to reach Pyunik’s goal on his second attempt. Just 4 minutes later, Tenton Yenne could have stood out, but during his free kick, Buchnev was there.

After the missed goal, our players could have taken the lead again, but substitute Sani Buhari failed to benefit from the advantageous position. In the added time of the game, the persistence of the home team gave fruits. Instead of the ball Bryan Alceus hit Armen Hambardzumyan in his own penalty area, and the rival received a penalty kick. Marius Noubissi put an end to the match with a well-aimed shot.

Ararat-Armenia won 3-2 and advanced to the third place in the standings, overtaking Pyunik. Let us add that the two teams will also compete for the Armenian Super Cup on April 9.
