Persistent struggle, individual awards and great experience: Pyunik 2011-1 returned to Yerevan

The 4th Konstantin Sarsania International Memorial Tournament ended in the Russian capital, Moscow, where our academy team Pyunik 2011-1 participated.

Davit Grigoryan’s boys took 7th place according to the final results of the tournament, playing persistently against strong rivals.

Our team was included in Group D with Chertanovo, Irkutsk and Forward

We started the group stage with a match against Chertanovo, which was not successful for us. Despite our persistence and great desire to win, we were left with 10 players after Vahagn Yeghyan received a red card and lost to the rival 1:2. Our only goal was scored by Mikael Khangeldyan, who confidently approached the penalty kick.

In the next two matches, our boys showed that they approach the tournament with great responsibility and confidently celebrated wins.
The Pyunik team sent 6 unanswered goals to the Forward goal: Artur Manukyan scored hat-tricks, Arman Arakelyan and Mamikon Zhamharyan scored one goal each and there was also an own goal. After the match, Artur Manukyan, who scored a hat-trick, was named the best player of the match.

In the match with Irkutsk, we again scored 6 goals against the rival, missing only one. Artur Manukyan and Narek Avetisyan scored a brace, while Mikael Khangeldyan and Mamikon Zhamharyan scored one goal each. By the decision of the tournament jury, Narek Avetisyan received the award for the best player of the match.

Our team took 2nd place in the group stage and continued the competition in the next stage, where the teams competed for the 1st to 8th places. Our opponent was Zenit St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, our guys lost 0:10 to the rival in an important match.

After this match, Pyunik 2011-1 competed with Krylya Sovetov for the 5-8th places. This was a match where our boys showed their character. Thanks to Hayk Martirosyan’s and Erik Hovhannisyan’s goals, the match ended 2:2, however, in the post-match penalty shootout, we lost 5:6 to Krylya Sovetov.

The last match was for the 7th place, where the Pyunik 2011-1 team was to compete with Akron. The boys showed character and were able to win 2:1, thanks to Narek Avetisyan’s and Hayk Martirosyan’s goals. The team's defender Alex Mkrtchyan, who showed brilliant play, was named the best player of the match.

The 4th Konstantin Sarsania International Memorial Tournament established individual awards. From our team, Artur Manukyan was recognized as the best player of the Pyunik 2011-1 team. Manukyan had scored 5 goals. It is noteworthy that our young player had showed such efficiency in 2 games of the group stage, thanks to which our team advanced to the next stage.

Hayk Martirosyan was awarded the "Young Hope" award as the youngest participant in the tournament, who was able to stand out with beautiful goals and bring victory to the team.

David Grigoryan, the head coach of the Pyunik 2011-1 team, summed up the tournament, also spoke about the importance of international tournaments

"The team is participating in the tournament in Moscow for the second year in a row. We could have taken a higher position. The guys approached the matches with great responsibility, but the awkwardness did not allow us to advance. We also had personnel problems, it was a big loss for us that the central forward was not on the field with us due to injury... Such tournaments are very beneficial for Armenian football, there is no such intensity in our domestic championships. We are grateful to the club management for this opportunity."
